Snag a sailor as Fleet Week comes to our shores. With thousands of sailors floating into the city, there is something to do in every borough, from the parade of ships to search and rescue demonstrations. As New Yorkers, we can express our gratitude to the visiting sailors and marines who are doing their part in keeping us all safe; a simple smile or a free drink will do.
Since 1984, New York City has held Fleet Week to honor the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The week features extensive military demonstrations, as well as the opportunity for the public to tour some of the visiting ships. The Memorial Day commemoration is a highlight of the week’s festivities, featuring the singing of Taps and a military aircraft fly over in honor of those who lost their lives in service to the United States.
Fleet Week Activities Include:
- Free daily tours on visiting ships
- Musical performances by sailors and marines
- Competitions including tug of war
- Parade of ships in the harbor, May 26th, 7pm
- Memorial Day Parade, May 31st at various locations and times
