Memorial Day weekend unofficially marks the beginning of summer with backyard barbeques and fun in the sun. It’s the perfect day to sit back and relax but let’s not forget why this is a “day off”.
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the last Monday of May to commemorate the men and women who died while serving our country in military service. Originally dubbed Decoration Day, many communities set aside a day following the end of the Civil War to mark the end of the war and remember those who passed. The alternative name of “Memorial Day” was first adopted in 1882. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time.
