Before I began sailing, most of my time was dedicated to chasing swells up and down the California and Mexican coastline searching for the perfect surf. While surrounding myself with people who shared a passion for water-sports, I discovered sailing. Although I had established a love for the water with surfing, sailing was a completely new practice. This solo, offshore sport was quite different from any other experience I had had in the water.
I started racing consistently three years ago after becoming a member of the Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) in the San Francisco Bay area. The SSS is a unique group of world-class sailors that provide an amazing network of support, competition, and a contagious Corinthian “do it yourself” ethos.
In 2008, I sailed out under the Golden Gate Bridge with the SSS Transpac fleet to send off my friends that were Hawaii bound. It was inspiring to follow the race from start to finish and it was there that I decided to take on this same challenge in 2010.
Since then I have been preparing myself for this journey. I have a to-do prep list, my surfboards, my boat, and a date to sail to Hawaii solo. I am excited to begin this challenge and would like to thank Nautica for their sponsorship and support.
