Nautica New York City Triathlon 2010

Rebeccah Wassner

Filip Ospaly, 34, of the Czech Republic, with a time of 1:46:28, and Rebeccah Wassner, 34, of New York City, who defended her title by clocking in at 2:00:25, were the winning pro triathletes at the 10th annual Nautica New York City Triathlon.

David Thompson, 32, of St. Paul, MN, with a time of 1:47:02; and Kyle Leto, 24, of Walnut Creek, CA, at 1:51:34, were the second and third male pros.  In the women’s pro race, Laurel Wassner of New York City, NY, Rebeccah’s twin sister, came in second at 2:02:16, followed by Nicole Kelleher, 40, of Charlottesville, VA, at 2:03:56.

In the elite race, Robert Wade, 28, of Arlington, VA, took top honors with a time of 1:53:38, followed by Brian Duffy Jr., 22, of West Chester, PA, with 1:54:01, and Justin Harris, 26, of New Paltz, NY, at 1:54:28.  In the women’s elite race, Alice Henriques, 29, of Morris Plains, NJ, led the pack at 2:10:36, followed by Allison Lind, 29, of New York City, 2:12:11, and Julia Mavrodin, 27, also of New York City, at 2:13:41.

More than 3,000 athletes took the plunge into the Hudson River along Manhattan’s West Side in Riverside Park (at West 99th Street) for the Nautica New York City Triathlon, with the pros diving into the water at 5:50 AM.   Participants swam 1.5 kilometers (.9321 miles) in the Hudson, biked 40 kilometers (24.85 miles) on the Henry Hudson Parkway, and ran 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in Central Park.

The 2010 race sold out in less than six minutes making the Nautica New York City Triathlon the most in-demand triathlon in America.

Athletes were represented from 44 states and 23 countries, including Australia, Bermuda, Colombia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.  Registration for this year’s race, which was held in November 2009, filled up in a little over 6 minutes. This year, there was $30,000 in prize money.

Once again, the Nautica New York City Triathlon hosted the USA Triathlon’s Accenture Paratriathlon National Championship with nearly 100 athletes.  This race is the only qualifying event for the World Championships; to qualify, they must finish in less than four hours.
