There are few things better than a three day weekend and this weekend we have first President George Washington to thank. In 1880, Congress declared President’s Day a federal holiday. As the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, February 22. In 1971, the holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February and in the mid-1980’s there was a strong push to include President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, in the celebration. Today, both men are honored on President’s Day.
