Hello from Oregon – the Beaver State! You may not know it, but the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast, which is home to gray whales, salmon, puffins and krill, is one of the richest temperate marine ecosystems in the world.
It’s also quite beautiful. Between the 360 miles of coastline that includes 22 major estuaries, long sandy beaches, rocky headlands and more than 1,400 rocky outcrops and islands – it’s a place worth checking out. It’s both the beauty of the area and its ecological importance that brought me to Oregon today, where Oceana is teaming up with Nautica and GQ to raise the profile of Oregon’s Important Ecological Areas.
To help us spread the message about the value of the Oregon’s seascape and the need to protect it, we’ve enlisted actor Josh Lucas, a native son of the U.S. Northwest, who is currently starring in The Lincoln Lawyer and is well known for his work in A Beautiful Mind and American Psycho. The Nautica/GQ/Oceana team is taking Josh around Depoe Bay, OR to give him a first-hand account of the area’s diversity (seabirds, seals, salmon, rockfish, smelt, anemones, crabs, sea stars…and on and on) so he can help take our message to policy makers and beyond.
Oceana is certainly thankful for Josh’s help, along with the help of Nautica and GQ, who understand how important it is to protect the rocky reefs, kelp forests and deep ocean waters that provide homes for so much amazing wildlife.
