Through September 25, Governor’s Island is open to the public all weekend long. All 172 acres of the island float beautifully between Manhattan and Brooklyn on the East River. Home to parks, concert venues, gardens, mini golf courses, and galleries, Governor’s Island has grown to become a popular place to visit and explore during the summer. You can take the short ferry ride from Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Queens and enjoy a sunset picnic or full day adventure. The full calendar of events can be seen in further detail through the link below, but the schedule includes exhibits and events that last all summer, such as the FIGMENT 2011 Sculpture Garden, Bike and Roll’s™ Free Bike Fridays, Big Apple Circus Family Fun Fest, and the Trapeze School of New York. Events coming up this month include the Rite of Summer Classical Music Festival on Saturday July 2 from 1 pm and 3 pm, and New York’s own country fair “Cook Out NYC” on Saturday July 10 at Noon. If you just want to explore, check out the bike paths, walking trails, and hiking routes that lead you all over the island. But before you leave, check out the 22 acres that are dedicated as the Governors Island National Monument honoring the history of the island that dates back to the 1600s.
