On Saturday, Oceana hosted its annual SeaChange Summer Party in Laguna Beach, CA where about 400 guests joined a group of concerned celebrities to raise funds for Oceana and discuss steps we can take to ensure healthy oceans for future generations. The event, which was hosted by board member Ted Danson and actress and sea turtle advocate Angela Kinsey, featured passionate speeches from Academy Award nominees Josh Brolin and Diane Lane.
“Oceana is where I turn for leadership in the changes that must be made to save the oceans,” said Lane, with the Pacific Ocean at her back. “It’s up to us to be pro-active, ambitious, far-reaching, deep-reaching in our pockets, demanding the changes in policies, lobby for tougher laws and enforcing these changes with some teeth.”
Diane’s speech certainly wasn’t ignored as guests and sponsors helped raised over $900,000 for Oceana’s conservation work. In addition, the evening’s very serious mission of raising funds and furthering Oceana’s mission was complemented by the playful and gregarious spirit of 8-yr-old film maker Wyatt Workman. His work, “Save the Sea from the Trash Monster!” not only earned him selection as a finalist for Oceana’s 2011 Ocean Heroes Award, but also embodied the event’s motto – that a healthy ocean is every child’s rightful inheritance.
Special thanks should go to Nautica, for its support of the event, and to all the other celebs, like Aimee Teegarden, Jeff Goldblum, Austin Stowell, Q’orianka Kilcher, Oscar Nunez, Ed Begley, Rachelle Carson and Jo Champa for their support too.
