Now is the season for family get-togethers holiday parties and seeing old friends that you haven’t seen in awhile. If the kids come along for the festivities, crafts are a fun activity to get them into the holiday spirit. A couple of ideas we have for this is an easy yarn pom-pom ornament and an origami dreidel that can both me made from simple supplies that you may have around the house already.
To make the yarn pom-pom ornament, you will need some festive yarn and some scissors.
1. Start by winding the yarn about 50 times around four fingers of one hand, once you get started winding, spread your fingers so you can tie a knot very tightly around the middle section of the yarn.
2. As you tighten the knot, slip the yarn off your fingers. Finish tightening the knot all the way.
3. Take the scissors and cut the loops at the top and bottom of the pom-pom and spread the yarn out so your pom-pom is full.
4. To finish it off, tie a knot at the top of the long strand for a hook to hang your ornament from.
After the kids finish their pom-pom ornaments they can make this origami cut out dreidel, so they can play the dreidel game!
All you need are crayons, a print out of the dreidel pattern, a cereal box, a 2” straw, scissors and glue.
1. Let the kids decorate the pattern with their crayons first, when they are finished, glue it to the cereal box.
2. Cut the dreidel out along the black line and around the black X on the top.
3. Fold the dreidel at all of the lines.
4. Glue the flaps down and insert the piece of the straw in to the top.
5. Play the dreidel game!
