Minds in the Water is a feature length documentary about the quest of professional surfer, Dave Rastovich, to protect the worlds oceans and the whales and dolphins that call the oceans their home. The compassion and love Dave and his crew have for whales and dolphins stemmed from sharing the waves and oceans with these amazing mammals. Dave’s urge to protect them from dolphin and whale killing drives inspired him to co-found Surfer’s for Cetaceans with artist and activist Howie Cooke. Along with the rest of the Surfer’s for Cetaceans crew they have worked to expose and increase media attention on the “drives” in Taiji, Japan otherwise known as “The Cove”. Minds in the Water chronicled their journey of taking action and inspiring others to also take action to prevent dolphin and whale killings. They have also brought attention to the fact that dolphin and whale meat is toxic for human consumption and helped remove the meat from markets and schools. According to the documentary website, “The message of the film is two fold: The power of one individual to inspire people to take action and make a difference and if ocean minded people are to pass on a sustainable culture, then they must become responsible stewards of their coastal environment.”
